****Several parents have contacted us asking if it ok for their child to miss class on Take Your Child to Work Day Thursday, April 26th.  BCS supports this learning experience if your family decides to participate.  Please email BCS attendance if your child will be absent on this day!****

Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth's environment and is celebrated on April 22 each year. At BCS, April 16 through April 20, 2018 we will be asking you to participate in a series of events that we hope will help to educate and inspire our entire community.  See below and let’s get started!

Waste Free Lunches

1: Use Tupperware containers that can be reused

2: Use lunch boxes instead of paper bags

3: Use a cloth napkin instead of a paper one

4: Don’t bring packaged food

5: Bring a reusable water bottle

6: Use a thermos for soup

7: Use silverware instead of plastic forks

8: Buy items in the lunch line that have no packaging

9: Pack unpackaged foods like fruits and vegetables

10: Recycle plastic and paper from your lunch

Which Animal Should BCS Adopt?

The Detroit Zoo ADOPTS program provides an opportunity for us to support endangered species around the world. Should we adopt a gorilla, a lemur or a tiger at the Detroit Zoo? Throughout the week we invite you to vote for your preferred animal with your loose change. We will have a jar for each animal in the main hallway and the animal with the most money will be adopted. Check out our ECO INFO board at school (across from the media center) for interesting facts about each animal.

                              Turn Off Your Engines Please!

If you anticipate being in the pickup line for longer than 3 minutes please turn off your engine. You will not only be saving gasoline and money, you will avoid releasing additional toxic emissions into the air. When you add up idling in a pickup line for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, 180 school days a year, you are spending 27,000 minutes not moving. This comes to 18.75 days!  Thank you for your support!

                                                              Earth Day Commitments

At BCS we value the 3 E’s: Each Other, Education, Environment. How will you show your appreciation for the environment this year? Throughout the week, we will be inviting students to write their own personal statements and commitments on the poster in the main hallway to inspire each other.

                                                         Let’s Learn Together

Our 3/4 students will be watching March of the Penguins at the cinema on Friday, April 20. The documentary depicts the yearly journey of the emperor penguins of Antarctica. Shared knowledge creates awareness, which can lead to action for your youngest BCS learners.
Our 7/8 students will be enjoying a presentation from SOCCRA on the importance of limiting waste and Reducing, Reusing and Recycling to avoid waste in landfills.

PLEASE ASK YOUR CHILD TO STOCK HIS/HER BINDER WITH PENCILS!!!
Many of us show up without any each day!!!

Please ask your child to pack headphones or earbuds in his/her backpack.  It would be best if they are a pair that can be left at school! Thank you so much!

Character Connections Word of the Week: ACCEPTANCE

·       “Acceptance doesn't mean resignation; it means understanding that something is what it is and that there's got to be a way through it.” – Michael J. Fox
·       “Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune.” – William James
·       “Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.” – Lao Tzu
