BCS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
FOR GRADES 3 & 4

All of the 3rd and 4th graders in Frishman, Seley, Wallington and Malizewski’s homerooms are now in Engineering Tech for the second semester.  Students are learning the importance and benefits of mass production and assembly line manufacturing.   This is all part of their interdisciplinary unit on Michigan history and the theme of Systems.  All of the students actually visited the Ford Dearborn Assembly plant/factory and we’ve studied and viewed video on mass production manufacturing.

Our major project is the mass production of a toy electric vehicle.  First semester homerooms reviewed all of the previous models of the electric vehicles that we have built in the past and the themes they represented.  Our model vehicle parameters were defined and we learned a little bit about design sketching and perspective views.   Over several weeks of submitting designs, the top two designs were voted on in each of the four homerooms and put into the final balloting.   The eight finalist designs included a helicopter, sports car, boat, garbage truck, camper bus, military transport vehicle and the Star Wars Luke Skywalker Speeder.   By an overwhelming majority, the Star Wars Speeder was selected and that is what we are building for this year’s project.

The first semester homerooms in Engineering Tech (Butzin, Davis, Parkin and Harvath) completed the design and selection process of the vehicle for the mass-production project.  They also started making parts for the Speeder.   They made the most of the axles from wooden dowel rods for the front wheels.    Currently, the second semester classes are in the parts production business until we are ready for final assembly.   All 3rd - 4th grade students will receive their finished Robot models at the same time during a special assembly in the spring.   Parents will be invited.

Third and fourth graders only receive report cards after the second and fourth quarters.   They will be marked as to how successfully they met the designated Engineering Technology Standards for their grade level, stated in the grade report.

Respectfully,

John Prisciandaro
BCS Engineering Technology Teacher
