JOIN THE “NO FOOD WASTE” CHALLENGE
Join us in this innovative service learning challenge!

Wasted food is a social problem! In 2013, 14.3 percent of U.S. households were food insecure at some time during the year. That is 48 million Americans, of which 16 million are children, living in food insecure households. Wholesome, nutritious food should feed people, not landfills. Food waste is a major problem that touches issues of sustainability, food security, and public health. We know that 40% of our food goes to waste and the majority of food is wasted at the consumer level - at grocery stores, at restaurants and in homes. We have a huge opportunity to educate our BCS community and build better habits that will lead to reducing food waste.

Starting January 16, 2018, BCS will be partnering with Foodstand, a sustainable eating behavior change program that provides an education and challenge experience via their mobile platform. The app provides daily education, tracking, one-on-one support, team and challenge set up, and reporting to help measure the impact of the initiative. The program supports our curriculum goals at BCS and will help us live into our 3E’s (education, environment, each other).

Please read the parent information letter and, if you would like your child to participate, print and complete the consent form returning it to your child’s homeroom/academic lab teacher no later than Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 (complete one form for each child participating).  For those who want to join in on the challenge, a voluntary workshop will be provided on Tuesday, 1/16/18 at 6:30 PM in the BCS media center (also on BCS Facebook Live).

These items will be used in the holiday shop, prizes for pokes and medical procedures, birthday and end of chemotherapy celebrations.  The department has said that they are running low on kids play medical kits, which are a hit.  Other recommendations from the department are:

New Baby Board Books

Paint Brushes
Large sheets of art paper
Wooden and ceramic paint kits
Xbox 360 games (new or used)
