We are in need of 5-gallon tower buckets for our tower
garden! We will be de-chlorinating 40 gallons of water in the buckets
before we fill our Tower Garden reservoir on Tuesday.
If you have any extra at home, please send them in for us!
Thanks so much!
At BCS we are always seeking to improve the
educational experience we provide to our students. We appreciate and value your
thoughts and ideas and invite you to reflect on the
2017 Summer Packet in

Packet. If you have children at different grade levels, you can complete the
survey multiple times. Thank you in advance for taking the time to give us your
feedback of how to improve the summer packet experience for
you. Click the following link to complete the brief survey: https://goo.gl/forms/wvhhceU9b0vKnnCG3

Connections Word of the week: COLLABORATION/TEAMWORK
· “I
invite everyone to choose forgiveness rather than division, teamwork over
personal ambition.” – Jean-Francois Cope
· “Alone
we can do so little, together we can do so much.” – Helen
Keller
· “Individual
commitment to a group effort--that is what makes a team work, a company work, a
society work, a civilization work.” – Vince Lombardi
If your child has not brought in a WATER BOTTLE to keep here or one that can go back and forth, please help him/her remember to pack one for tomorrow!
Please have your child bring 1-2 chapter books to school each day/week for DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read).
Upcoming Events:
Halloween Tuesday Oct. 31st
We would like to remind you that BCS will celebrate Halloween on Tuesday, October 31 which is a half day for BCS students (11:30 AM dismissal-no choice hour). At BCS, we welcome parents and guardians to join in our festivities which will begin with our annual all-school parade at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 31. Parents should remain outside to avoid congestion in our hallways (weather permitting, we’ll parade indoors if it’s raining), and the students will proceed outside on the sidewalk at the east end of building, circling around the front of the school, then the walkway in front of the pool to the west end of the school by the bus loop. The parade will begin with the 3/4 students followed by 5/6 and 7/8 students. The classroom parties will immediately follow the parade back in the students’ homerooms/academic labs around 10:20 AM. The parties will conclude at 11:15 AM to clean up and prepare for dismissal at 11:30 a.m. (no Choice Hour on half days). Please be sure your child is dressed in an appropriate costume for school in order to avoid scaring any of our younger students.

We ask that students avoid the
following:
·
masks that cover the face (masks restrict vision,
can lead to accidents, and often frighten our younger students)
·
blood-like makeup, real or pretend weapons
(knives, guns, swords, etc.), evil, scary, or horror characters
Some suggestions for
costumes include: Inventors, Animals, clothing from an
historical period, Presidents, Ethnic clothing, Community helpers (police,
fire fighter…), Super heroes, Careers (doctor, teacher, engineer…), Book
characters, Sports (football player, snowboarder, marathoner…), Friendly
characters, Food. You could even develop a costume that embraces our BCS
Theme Empathy! Remember that children tend to “act”
their costumes, so the appropriateness of the costume is important. Thank
you in advance for helping make this day an enjoyable one for our
students.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES – Thanksgiving 2017!
On
Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21, BCS and all elementary schools in
the district will host parent-teacher conferences. That said, Thanksgiving
is also the same week. Unfortunately, teachers will not be able to
accommodate rescheduled conferences due to early vacations, so please plan to
attend your child’s conference on Monday or Tuesday during the 1:00-4:00 PM or
5:00-8:00 PM time frames. Specific information and links to sign up for
conferences will be shared on Monday, October 30.
The BCS/PTA Reflections Art Program officially began this
month! This National program is open to all BCS students. Please
pass along the information to your students, and encourage those who are
interested. You can even integrate it in to your curriculum, as the work
can be done in or out of school as long as it is an original idea/work of the
student.Here’s some basic information:
·
Create an original artwork based on the theme
“Within Reach”·
Art categories include Dance Choreography, Film
Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts·
Rules and entry form available at https://www.birmingham.k12.mi.us/Page/6906·
All entries (including Summer Packet work)
collected in the BCS Media Center until November 10th·
Top 2 entries per category/division (Middle
School, Intermediate, and Special Artist) go to District competition, and
possibly State and National Recognition·
All participants invited to the Reflection
Recognition Lunch in the springPlease encourage
students to read the General Rules, and their specific category rules before
starting their artwork. It’s very disappointing to be disqualified for
using the wrong medium, or electronic format. Many entries are
disqualified because students turn in incomplete forms. All questions can be directed to Diana Patterson: d4patter4@sbcglobal.net
