We go live on Thursday 3-19-20!!

Dear BCS Families!

As you know, tomorrow, Thursday, March 19, virtual learning classrooms will open to students. Knowing the rich instruction your student receives at school cannot be replicated with an online experience, our goal is to provide meaningful enrichment opportunities online for students by grade-level and subject areas.

The links in a Google Classroom are organized by content area. Since we cannot guarantee equal access, students will be encouraged, not required, to complete activities/tasks. Thus, we will not grade any assignments or have any assessments over the next few weeks.

Starting tomorrow, teachers will encourage students to complete activities in a new district Google Classroom. You can expect teachers to check in with their students a few times a week. Please do not hesitate to reach out to teachers if your student is having difficulty accessing the learning activities. Our staff will be flexible during this challenging time.

In preparation for tomorrow’s launch, we are asking each student to make sure that they are able to log into their BCS grade-level Google Classroom.  A few Frequently Asked Questions may be helpful:

How do I access my student’s Google Classroom?
Middle school students were automatically registered in their grade-level Classrooms by the district. Here is a video of how middle school students access their Google Classroom.

The video said that students would need to log in with their BPS Google Account. How do I know my student’s BPS Google Account?
Your student’s username is the same as the username that they use to log into the computers at school. However, usernames for home access will use a different BPS account. Students will use Username@bps-schools.com instead of Username@birmingham.k12.mi.us. Most students in middle school will know how they log into a computer at school. If your student does not know their username or password, they can contact the BPS HelpDesk at HelpDesk@birmingham.k12.mi.us or 248-203-3123.

What if my student is not registered in the correct Google Classroom?
If, for some reason, your student is not registered in the correct Google Classroom, the following codes will give students access to the BPS Online Learning Google Classroom for their grade level. To sign in to a Google Classroom by using a Class Code, see this video.

What else can I do today?
You can have your student watch videos on digital citizenship. There are several videos available  for secondary students at https://www.commonsense.org/education/videos/discussing-digital-drama
Students in 8th grade can set up an account for PSAT preparation through Khan Academy at https://www.khanacademy.org/sat.

Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time. First, as parents, you need to take care of yourself and your children. Please remember everyone’s health and wellbeing come first. If we can be of any support, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Let us close with a quote from Coretta Scott King, which we feel embodies our BCS community: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”  Thank you for your continued understanding, support, patience and flexibility during this major health concern.

Sincerely,

Mark and Jason
