August 2018
Dear Families:
You’ve all read the headlines and seen the news stories: food
allergies are a growing concern in schools across America. Millions of children
- children who are perfectly healthy and normal in every other way - must watch
every single bite they eat, or risk suffering a severe or even life-threatening
reaction. A major health issue such as this one needs to be taken very
seriously, and it has always been the practice of this school to make the
safety and well-being of our students our top priority.
At least one student in your child’s class has a serious nut
allergy. Therefore, we are putting the
following safety guidelines into effect:
·
Please do not send any peanuts/tree nuts or
foods containing peanuts/tree nuts to be eaten as snacks in the classroom.
Students can enjoy peanuts/tree nuts at lunch time keeping their lunch in their
locker until then. Examples of tree nuts
include almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, macadamia, pine nuts, pistachios,
hazelnuts, Brazil nut, chestnuts, filberts and hickory nuts. It is ok for other students to eat snacks labeled “Made in
the Same Facility as Tree nuts” or “Made on the same equipment as…” Just avoid
snacks that have peanut/tree nut as part of the ingredients. For a safe snack
guide (nut-free) go to the following link:
http://snacksafely.com/download/.
·
We will not be doing any classroom projects
that involve tree nuts (like bird feeders) or nut shells (art projects). Please
do not send any of these projects into the classroom with your child.
·
Please adhere to our Student Handbook
guidelines regarding birthdays (page 16).
We want to celebrate and recognize
birthdays of our students as we know they are important events in their lives.
If parents wish to celebrate a child’s birthday with a “treat” at the school,
we are asking the recognition to be non food-based. While health and
wellness is the primary reason, more and more children have dietary
restrictions, such as food intolerance, food allergies, students with medical
conditions, and those trying to reduce their consumption of foods that are high
in calories and low in nutrition.
·
If your child eats nuts for breakfast, we
would greatly appreciate your making sure that his/her hands are washed with
soap and water before leaving for school. Water alone does not do the trick!
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you
understand how deeply important it is to respect and adhere to these
guidelines. I encourage you to get a sense of this life-threatening allergy by
viewing a short video. Check out this short educational video at the following link: https://vimeo.com/206662895?ref=em-v-share. If throughout the course
of the year you have any questions or concerns about food-allergy-related
issues, please do not hesitate to contact any one of us.
Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy school year!
Sincerely,
Mark Morawski Jason Hill
