This holiday season, we are partnering with Mittens for Detroit to help provide good quality gloves and mittens for kids in Detroit. There will be a bin in the front office to collect gloves and mittens. Students will be writing notes to kids during our holiday party on December 20^th to accompany each pair of mittens.

                                          

We believe that creating an environment where kindness flourishes is essential for our students’ growth and well-being. To support this, we are encouraging students to engage in acts of kindness, whether big or small. We invite you to discuss with your children the importance of treating others with compassion and empathy.

Math:  

-3rd Grade: 

-Get Checkpoint C signed and show me on 12/16/24.

-Students were given an OPTIONAL rounding math packet. I explained that optional means parents decide.  You are in charge and it is also optional to turn it in. You can also find additional math practice on this blog under 3rd Grade Math.  Look for the additional IM practice link!  

-We have 3 iready math lessons due by Friday. (33 total for the year). These can be accessed on any device with internet.  Visit Birmingham Public Schools and search for ClassLink. 

-Complete at least 3 sessions of Xtramath by Friday.  (Students should complete 1 session which is about 5-7 minutes.  Click continue until Mr. C says that you are done!)

-4th Grade:  

We have a new set of online fact tests due on Monday, December 9.  We also have 3 iready math lessons due by Friday, December 6th (27 total for the year by 12-6).  These can be accessed on any device with internet.  Visit Birmingham Public Schools and search for ClassLink.  

In class we have a goal of completing one "fluency flight" a day in our math iready program.  If your child misses a day of school, please ask him/her to complete this at home.  It takes about 5 minutes.

Language Arts: 

-Bring chapter books to read in class.  You will keep your books inside of your desk. 

-3rd graders:  Read 20 minutes each night

-4th graders:  Read 30 minutes each night

***We are up to 33 iready reading lessons passed by Friday, December 20.  Please ensure your child is caught up!

Writing: Friendly Letters to our Groves Penpals

Students received a friendly letter from their Groves High School Penpal to share with you.  We are excited to write back to our penpals!   Please get a parent signature for the penpal writing assignment that is coming home on 12/10/24.   The letter is due on January 10, 2024!   

Word Study:  Word List #13: Words with /k/ sound: -k, -ck, -nk, -ch, -qu, -c

We will take out spelling test in class on Friday! Each week your child will write the words in his/her planner.  The word lists are also available to study using Powerspelling (your child knows their login). This is an optional way to study if your child has their own device at home.  Student logins are taped inside of your child's planner. Please show your weekly spelling test score to your parents in Powerspelling- Click Scores/Results.

Ask you child about the Language Arts Learning Targets:

Personal Narrative Essay- Ask your child to share with you the character, setting, problem and solution of his/her Constellation Narrative Essay that we are writing. Remember to include details about the sights, sounds and actions that you included to describe the setting of the story.  

-Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. -Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. -Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. -Use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence of events. -Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. -Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

Social Studies: 

We are discovering the social sciences and exploring regions of the United States.  

    Ask you child about the Learning Targets:

        -Map Skills: compass rose, latitude, longitude, parts of a globe, hemispheres, 

        map legend, coordinate grid map

Science: 

Our study of Motion and Matter focuses on exploring the concepts of motion, forces, and the properties of matter, including topics like magnetism, gravity, changes in motion, mixtures, and the metric system, allowing students to investigate how forces interact with objects and how different states of matter behave through hands-on experiments and investigations. 

        Ask you child about the Learning Targets: 

            -How can we change the motion of wheels rolling down ramps?

            -How are magnetism and gravity the same?

            -What do scientists do? 

            -Tell a parents about your group experiments with magnets.
