Math:  

-3rd Grade: 

-Checkpoint A was sent home on 1/29/25 for a parent signature. Students will show me the signature and keep the checkpoint for the unit study. 

-Unit 4: We are exploring division and the relationship between multiplication and division.   

Third Grade:  Unit 4 Math Goals

-Complete at least 3 sessions of Xtramath by Friday.  (Students should complete 1 session which is about 5-7 minutes.  Click continue until Mr. C says that you are done!)

In class class we have a goal of completing one "fluency flight" a day in our math iready program.  If your child misses a day of school, please ask him/her to complete this at home.  It takes about 5 minutes.

We have 3 iready math lessons due by Friday. (39 total). These can be accessed on any device with internet.  Visit Birmingham Public Schools and search for ClassLink.

-4th Grade:  

Today (Friday) your child is bringing home a blue test letter that is due on Thursday before we take our test.  Books will come home Monday.

Language Arts: 

-Bring chapter books to read in class.  You will keep your books inside of your desk. 

-3rd graders:  Read 20 minutes each night

-4th graders:  Read 30 minutes each night

Writing: We are currently learning how to read and write nonficiton books.  Right now we are focused on thorough descriptions that will help the reader create pictures his/her mind.

Writing Assignment: Friendly Letter to our incoming 3rd Graders is due Monday, February 10th and was assigned on January 27th. Students can include a picture as well!

Our Groves friends picked up our letters and we are excited to get some in return soon!

Word Study:   #17: Words with VCCV pattern 

We will take out spelling test in class on Friday! Each week your child will write the words in his/her planner.  The word lists are also available to study using Powerspelling (your child knows their login). This is an optional way to study if your child has their own device at home.  Student logins are taped inside of your child's planner. Please show your weekly spelling test score to your parents in Powerspelling- Click Scores/Results. 

Ask you child about the Language Arts Learning Targets:

Personal Narrative Essay- Ask your child to share with you the character, setting, problem and solution of his/her Constellation Narrative Essay that we are writing. Remember to include details about the sights, sounds and actions that you included to describe the setting of the story.  

-What is the message of Sarah, Plain and Tall? -Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. -Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. -Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. -Use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence of events. -Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. -Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

Social Studies: 

The Northeast Region Map Quiz will be Monday, February 3. The Northeast packet was sent home on 1/27/25 and will serve as a study guide for the map quiz.  Ask your child to share this packet with you!

We are currently discovering the social sciences and exploring regions of the United States. We will study the Northeast region, Southeast region, Midwest region, and Southwest regions of the Unites States.  

    Ask you child about the Learning Targets:

         - Northwest Region Study-Land ad Water, Climate, PRoducts and Natural Resources, Landmarks,            Culture, Fun, and People

        -Map Skills: compass rose, latitude, longitude, parts of a globe, hemispheres, 

          map legend, coordinate grid map

       

Science: 

We are excited to study Energy!   This module provides firsthand experiences in physical science dealing with the anchor phenomenon of energy. The five investigations focus on the concepts that energy is present whenever there is motion, electric current, sound, light, or heat, and that energy can transfer from one place to other. The driving question for the module is how does energy transfer between systems?

Previous Science Units of Study:

Motion and Matter focuses on exploring the concepts of motion, forces, and the properties of matter, including topics like magnetism, gravity, changes in motion, mixtures, and the metric system, allowing students to investigate how forces interact with objects and how different states of matter behave through hands-on experiments and investigations. 

        Ask you child about the Learning Targets: 

            -How can we change the motion of wheels rolling down ramps?

            -How are magnetism and gravity the same?

            -What do scientists do? 

            -Tell a parents about your group experiments with magnets.
